Which is better for backups: an external HDD or SSD?
For backups and archives, an HDD: it is several times cheaper per terabyte. An external SSD makes sense if speed and shock resistance matter and the capacity is small.
Does an external drive need a power adapter?
Portable 2.5" drives are powered from the USB port, so no adapter is needed. Desktop 3.5" drives always run on their own power adapter.
Does an external drive work with a TV and a Mac?
Yes, but out of the box drives are usually formatted in NTFS for Windows. For macOS and most Smart TVs, reformat the drive to exFAT (this erases the data on it).
Why is my external drive copying slowly?
Most often it is plugged into a USB 2.0 port. Connect it to USB 3.0 (a blue port or one marked SS). Copying thousands of small files is also always slower than one large file - that is how HDDs work.
