In short: only three companies make hard drives today: Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba. All the other familiar names (HGST, Hitachi, Samsung, Maxtor, Fujitsu) were absorbed by these three as the market consolidated. External drive brands (Transcend, ADATA, LaCie, Silicon Power) do not make HDDs themselves: their enclosures contain drives from one of the three manufacturers.
Western Digital (WD)
An American company and one of the two largest HDD makers. The line-up is colour-coded, which makes choosing easy:
- WD Blue - desktop and laptop drives for everyday tasks. Drives for PC.
- WD Purple - CCTV, 24/7 recording. Surveillance drives.
- WD Red Plus, Red Pro - NAS and network storage. NAS drives.
- WD Gold, Ultrastar - enterprise class and servers. Server drives.
- WD Elements, My Passport - external drives. External HDDs.
In 2012 WD bought HGST (formerly Hitachi's hard drive division), so the enterprise Ultrastar series is now sold under the WD brand.
Seagate
The other of the two largest makers and the oldest independent player in the market. Key series:
- BarraCuda - desktop drives for PCs.
- SkyHawk - CCTV, including versions with video analytics support (SkyHawk AI).
- IronWolf, IronWolf Pro - NAS.
- Exos - high-capacity enterprise drives for servers and data centers.
- Expansion, One Touch - external drives. Seagate also owns the LaCie brand.
Over the years Seagate acquired Maxtor (2006) and Samsung's hard drive business (2011).
Toshiba
A Japanese manufacturer, third in the HDD market. Fujitsu's hard drive business moved to Toshiba in 2009. Series:
- P300 - desktop drives.
- S300 - CCTV.
- N300 - NAS.
- MG series - enterprise drives.
- Canvio - external drives.
What about Transcend, ADATA, LaCie?
These are external storage makers: they design the enclosure, USB controller, shock and water protection and bundled software. The hard drive mechanism inside comes from one of the three manufacturers. So choose an external drive by its enclosure, interface and use case, not by the "platter brand".
Which manufacturer is best
Reliability depends more on the specific series and how well it matches the use case than on the brand. Any maker's desktop drive will cope worse with 24/7 recording in a CCTV recorder than another maker's dedicated series. So first decide on the task (PC, laptop, NAS, CCTV, server), then compare the three makers' series in that class. How they behave and what affects them is covered in How long does a hard drive last. A scenario-by-scenario comparison of specific WD, Seagate and Toshiba models is in our best HDDs of 2026 ranking.
